One night in November, 1943, this airman was the wireless operator/air gunner of an aircraft detailed to attack Berlin. Shortly after the take-off, smoke was observed to be issuing from some important equipment. Displaying commendable promptitude and much technical ability Sergeant Hall eliminated the cause of the fire. Whilst over the target area a generator in the wireless apparatus started emitting smoke. Sergeant Hall switched off the apparatus but it was to no avail. The aircraft became filled with black smoke which almost blinded him. Nevertheless, he succeeded in disconnecting leads, plugs and fuses and then by means of extinguishers managed to put out the fire. By his skilful, cool and resourceful efforts, this airman contributed grearly to the success of the sortie.
