Distinguished Flying Cross

Flying Officer WINES was posted to No. 22 (Intruder) Squadron on the 20th June, 1942, and has distinguished himself by the manner and high standard in which he has discharged his operational duties. His ability and determination has ensured the maximum results from all attacks.

On one occasion his aircraft was hit, rendering all hydraulic ancillary equipment inoperative. In this condition with the aircraft bomb doors open, he successfully fought off an attacking enemy fighter but was injured in the resultant crash landing which had to be effected as the direct outcome of these attacks.

Flying Officer WINES was a member of a formation of five aircraft which attacked and completely destroyed seven out of eight huts at Waipali on the 21st February, 1943. This attack was subsequently confirmed as having caused the deaths of two hundred and thirtyseven Japanese. He was also a member of a formation which successfully bombed Lae airfield on the 3rd March, 1943, thus denying the use of the field to enemy fighters which were seeking to protect a convoy which was destroyed on the 3rd March, 1943. He was also a member of a formation which, on the 3rd March, 1943, attacked a "Hubiki" class destroyer during the Battle of the Bismark Sea and Flying Officer WINES scored a direct hit upon the destroyer which was subsequently confirmed as sunk as a result of this bombing.

In the face of intense A/A fire he has at all times shown great determination and outstanding courage in all his operations against the enemy.
