Flying Officer UTBER has served with No. 4 A/C Squadron in active operations against the enemy for nine months. With complete disregard for his own safety, he frequently flew at tree top level over enemy occupied territory in relatively slow, unmanoeuvrable and defenceless aircraft, and directed artillery fire against enemy troop concentrations, enabling the Army to achieve their objectives with minimum losses.
On the 3rd July, 1943, when returning from a tactical reconnaissance, he observed a large formation of enemy bombers escorted by fighters. Regardless of his danger, he stayed in close proximity to the enemy formation and directed allied fighters to the area, with the result that a large number of enemy aircraft were destroyed and the remainder dispersed.
Flying Officer UTBER has displayed courage and initiative of a high order.
