Flight Sergeant THOMSON enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force as an aircrew trainee on 15th September, 1940, and was promoted to the rank of temporary Sergeant on 16th May, 1941.

As a member of No. 32 Squadron, Flight Sergeant THOMSON has consistently rendered outstanding service in the New Guinea area in the capacity of a Wireless Air Gunner.

In the course of an operational flight in Hudson aircraft over Rabaul his aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters. In the ensuing action the aircraft was badly damaged and five members of the crew including the pilot wounded. The pilot was so seriously wounded that he was unable to continue until his wounds had been attended by Flight Sergeant THOMSON who also assisted in flying the aircraft. But for his resource and skill the aircraft could not have returned to its base.

Flight Sergeant THOMSON has completed 693 operational hours in the course of which he has constantly displayed initiative, courage and skill of a high order.
