Flight Lieutenant PAULL was posted to No. 7 GR/B squadron in November 1942 and has completed 360 hours of anti-submarine patrols and reconnaissance flights, with a total of 63 sorties.
As a flight commander he has displayed outstanding initiative, resourcefulness and skill while flying under most trying conditions, such as restricted visibility, low ceilings and other tropical conditions, and has performed these hazardous and continuous patrols cheerfully and with great determination.
On the 24th January, 1943, whilst patrolling over the Arafura Sea, his starboard engine cut out. Handling his aircraft with infinite skill he piloted it to within 30 miles of its base before the second engine cut out, when he calmly and with greak skill made a forced landing in the sea. By his encouragement and cheerfulness he did much to maintain the morale of his crew while waiting to be rescued from their dinghy.
Flight Lieutenant PAULL has carried out his responsibilities as a flight commander with the utmost skill, determination and courage. His devotion to duty has been an outstanding example to other members of his flight.
