On one occasion when his aircraft was attacked by three enemy fighters, he, with the assistance of the rear gunner, was successful in damaging one enemy aircraft and probably destroying another.

On the 8th March, 1943, Flight Sergeant NOLAN was a member of the crew of a Beaufort which attacked a number of enemy fighters who were strafing the survivors of the "S" Jacob. They attacked with such skill and determination that the enemy broke off the engagement.

Throughout his operational career, Flight Sergeant NOLAN has displayed courage, keenness and determination of the highest order.
