Squadron Leader MUNRO assumed command of No. 4 Tac/R. Squadron on 4th October, 1943, after the fall of Lae. The land operations of the 7th and 9th Australian Divisions, with which the unit was co-operating, called for the extensive use of forward operational bases. The operations carried out by the squadron, under arduous conditions, from those bases played a considerable part in the success of the land operations in the Markham and Ramu valleys and on the Huon Peninsula.
Squadron Leader MUNRO's organising ability and outstanding qualities of leadership contributed considerably to the successes achieved by the squadron during this vital period. His courage, determination and tenacity when carrying out the many types of operational missions required of him have set an excellent example, and inspired his subordinates. His devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy is in the highest traditions of the Service.
Group Captain MUNRO was posted to RAAF Command Headquarters as Staff Officer Close Support, and in this capacity he performed valuable service throughout the operational formations. He was then transferred as Staff Officer Plans to Forland Headquarters, Philippine Islands, where his duty was to co-ordinate air-force aspects of plans for the forthcoming OBOE series of offensive operations with those of the Army. With the movement of Advanced Headquarters, RAAF Command, he moved to Morotai and became Staff Officer Operations. In all these appointments he has performed work of great importance to RAAF Command operations.
In his present capacity as Staff Officer Operations, his devotion to duty, attention to detail and skilled staff work have constituted a valuable contribution towards the success of the air support in the Borneo operations. He has, in addition, taken part in the landings of this series of operations, serving under fire. His practical experience thus has added to his ability and value as a Staff Officer.
