Flight Lieutenant CRAIG has served continuously with No. 22 (Int) Squadron in active operations against the enemy for a period of nine months. During the last four months of that period he has acted as a flight commander. He has always displayed remarkable keenness, enterprise and thoroughness in planning raids in which he led his flight, and the courage, tenacity and coolness with which he carried out his missions has been of inestimable value to his squadron.
On the 20th May, 1943, he planned and led an attack against Salamaua. The target was in close proximity to concentrated anti-aircraft positions, but a most skilful tactical approach enabled all his aircraft to attain their objective without damage whilst inflicting severe losses on the enemy.
Again on the 21st June, 1943, when leading a formation of Boston aircraft against the Mubo area, twelve enemy bombers and twentyone enemy fighters were encountered when over the target. He immediately called up friendly fighters who were in the vicinity, and coolly continued to lead his formation on to complete their bombing mission.
Flight Lieutenant CRAIG has completed 138 hours of operational flying, including 39 strikes during operations at Buna, Mubo, Komiatium, Salamaua, Lae and the Bismarck Sea, and by his skill, aggressiveness and determination has contributed considerably to the successes achieved by No. 22 Squadron. He is an exceptionally fine pilot and leader, whose courage and devotion to duty are worthy of the highest praise.
